Logout issues and Desktop choice issues

Hello, I've launched a couple different Ubuntu Desktop instances and I've been trying to switch desktops to the "normal" Ubuntu desktop. I can't logout consistently, I get into some sort of state where the Logout menu item does nothing. When I was able to successfully log out, I never saw the desktop chooser that is shown in the screenshot in the FAQ. Any help?

Sorry for a very late reply - The forum has been screwed up. We have had too many spammers and post notification did not work. Hopefully from now on things should work normally.

Our tests showed desktop switching is working reliably from browser access. It is possible but tricky to do so with VNC client software.

For browser based desktop access, please double-check the following points:

  • Machine might be busy and note responding to "Logout" request. This can be more serious because of EC2 are still "warming up".
  • If you have changed the desktop access password, auto-relogin will fail after you log out. Please reload the webpage and enters the new password you set during startup.

Please let us know if this helps.

For ubuntu 18.04, the default password is the instance. For earlier releases the password is empty, which means you can just press ENTER to log in. However, sometime software upgrade would disable empty password and make it stop working. In that case, you will need to use ssh to log into the instance and change ubuntu password.

For more details about this and various other features, see the table inside this announcement.
